August/September

We weren't able to get everyone to book club this month, but we did manage to get 4 of us there which was half of our group. We played games and talked about books, and since we had half of us there we decided to choose a book for October anyway.

The book we chose is: The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan (see to the right)
This was Mindy's submission and I'd love to have her tell more about it because my memory doesn't do it justice.

I also created a group on Facebook for our book club. It will be another way that we can keep in touch and ask questions and send reminders and such. It is a secret club and only members will see it. If we need to add someone I think you can just add them to the group. You can also unsubscribe to the group if you don't want to be in it anymore. I hope this will be helpful to us. August Book Club

So. . .I hear August was a hard month to coordinate our schedules. This Friday was supposed to work out the best, but I hear Sheri can't come, Christy can't come, Annette's so busy it wouldn't hurt her feelings to skip, I might have family in town later that night (I still would host though--I miss you guys!). Anyway. . .Annette suggested that we do an online forum and choose our books from that. What do you think? Please respond ASAP, so that we can make plans. THANKS!! Angela

We didn't really decide what we're doing but if we keep on our schedule our next book club should be July 8th, discussing The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.  However we discussed having an unbirthday party and everyone bringing a gift to exchange.  What does everyone want to do?

Here is a list of books we discussed at the open forum this month. I tried to add a little more detail to each submission to help us remember what was said about each. If I got some info wrong let me know and I will change it, my memory is faulty.

Traci liked all of these

Sybil by Flora Rheta Schreiber -- about a girl with multiple personalities and her discovery of them

Sheri mention another that is like Sybil it's called Mother Had a Secret by Tiffany Fletcher -- a daughter tells of her experience with her mother’s multiple personalities (LDS setting)

The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett – about a queen who finds a mobile library and discovers a love of reading that changes her life

Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand – a retired major and a widow are brought together by a love of reading. Another good book similar to The Uncommon Reader

Mindy read some of the previous submissions

She liked The Queen’s Theif series but liked the 2^nd and 3^rd books best – The Queen and King of Attolia

She also liked The Shape of Mercy by Susan Meissner but thought the ending was a bit rushed

She didn't like Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld and I can't remember why

Angela liked all of these

Peace Like a River – by leif enger really liked the way it was written & Lou liked it too. It's about an asthmatic boy and his family searching for an outlaw older brother who was charged with murder.

The Message by Lance Richardson – about his after death experience

Carry on, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham – about a boy who loves math and uses it at sea for navigation

Margaret liked all of these

Thread of Grace by Mary Doria Russell – about Jews in Italy at the end of WWII

The Cookbook Collector by Allegra Goodman – surprised that she liked it since it’s about the privileged class

True Grit by Charles Portis – the book was better than the movie

Jen liked

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli – about a girl who goes to high school and calls herself Stargirl. How she this strange new girl causes a stir in the student population

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks – by Rebecca skloot – about the discovery of HeLa cells, the first immortal human cells grown in culture, and the woman they came from

Teen help books that she liked

Get Out of My Life, but First Could You Drive Me & Cheryl to the Mall by Anthony E. Wolf

Escaping the Endless Adolescence by Joseph Allen (she liked this one the best)
